An awesome old tree stump!

Today at Cherokee Park we found a gold mine! Check out this awesome decomposing old tree stump! It crumbles to the touch. Of course we had to poke at it and see what was inside!

Below: See the exposed middle? That part was still really hard!

We discovered some amazing critters. Below: This is a flat bark beetle larva:
When he grows up, he will be a beetle! How cool is that!

Below: We think this is a superworm.
He has darker parts on the front and back compared to the mealworms we feed Rex.

Below: a centipede.
These are creepy buggers! And, yes, they do bite, though it is rarely dangerous.
Also, they are predators. This zippy little guy was probably hunting while he was in this log.

We found tons of small black ants, and a few large ones too!
Plenty of eggs, too!

The roly-polys LOVED this log.
Scientific name: Armadillidium vulgare
